The new ABC Daytime drama "The City" is proud to feature SoHo, New York as a character all on its own. SoHo, an acronym for South of Houston, is the setting for this hot half-hour drama, and is as compelling as the fabulous storylines to be told on "The City." This popular downtown district, known for its galleries and loft living, is a 26 block landmark area bordering on Houston Street on the north, Canal Street on the south, Broadway on the east, and West Broadway on the west.
SoHo's fascinating history makes it probably one of the most interesting of all New York's neighborhoods. Considered to be too remote and unattractive, the neighborhood wasn't even reconstructed during the post W.W.II building boom. Instead it's 19th-century palazzo style has remained and endured to the delight of all New Yorkers.
SoHo's rich history and unique architecture make it a fascinating canvas for "The City's" characters to unfold. Undoubtedly, the wealthy Sydney Chase, played by Morgan Fairchild, is attracted to the classical Greek, Roman, and Gothic motifs of the area's buildings. In addition, the other characters from Corinth will appreciate the fine details of SoHo architectural style, including the elaborate Corinthian columns. Additionally, the neighborhood's mixture of working artists, galleries, restaurants and boutiques, provides an enchanting and romantic backdrop for all of "The City's" characters.
The New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission designated landmark status to the SoHo district in 1973, acknowledging the historical value of the cast-iron and pre-Civil War buildings. Currently, the SoHo Partnership, an organization formed in 1992, helps maintain the neighborhood's status and aids in social services for the area.
Today, SoHo is a popular gathering place for New York's artistic community, residents and tourists all drawn by the charm of the neighborhood. "The City" looks forward to having SoHo as its home.
